There’s a version of pregnancy that doesn’t show up on the Pinterest boards \u2014 the one where you’re not just picturing a sleepy newborn in soft wraps, but also quietly wondering: what if my baby comes early? What if we end up in the NICU? What if I’m recovering from surgery and can’t imagine getting dressed, let alone getting photographed? If any of that sounds familiar, I want you to know something now, before your due date arrives: your baby’s story deserves to be photographed \u2014 however it unfolds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


When the Birth Plan Changes, the Session Can Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There’s a version of newborn photography that lives in everyone’s head – a sleepy, curled-up baby wrapped in soft fabric, completely still and perfectly posed. And while I love those sessions, that image doesn’t represent every baby who comes through my studio. Some babies arrive early. Some spend their first weeks in the NICU. Some moms are recovering from a C-section and barely have the energy to get dressed, let alone think about photos. None of that means the session isn’t possible. It just means we plan a little differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve worked with families in exactly these situations, and what I’ve come to understand is that the photos we make under harder circumstances often carry the most weight. The images don’t just show a baby – they show everything it took for that baby to get here.

What a Session Actually Looks Like for NICU and C-Section Families<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I once photographed twins who were born around 27 weeks. They spent close to three months in the NICU before they were ready to come in. By the time we did their session, they were near their due date but developmentally in a very different place than a typical full-term newborn would be at that age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the twins was still on oxygen. We kept it on for most of the session and worked around the tubing rather than trying to hide it. We removed it for just a couple of poses, very briefly, with mom’s involvement and comfort guiding that decision the entire time. Those babies were alert, making eye contact, full of personality. They weren’t the sleepy, curled-up newborns you might picture – and honestly, their images weren’t typical newborn portraits. But they were real<\/em>, and they were beautiful, and they showed exactly where those babies were at that moment in their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s the whole point.

What You Actually Need to Know Before Your Session

<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Babies don’t have to be sleeping<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This is probably the biggest assumption I run into. Families think that if their baby won’t sleep, the session won’t work. That’s not true. As long as baby is fed and content, we can work with whatever mood they’re in. Alert babies bring their own kind of magic – eye contact, expressions, little moments of connection with mom or dad that sleeping babies can’t give you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


“Too old” isn’t a real barrier for special circumstances<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If your baby was premature or spent time in the NICU, the typical newborn window doesn’t apply the same way. We work to get babies in as soon as they’re ready and able, regardless of where that falls on the calendar. Special circumstances call for flexibility, and I’d rather figure out the timing together than have you assume it’s too late and skip it entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


NICU babies won’t pose like full-term newborns – and that’s okay<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Babies who’ve been through a NICU stay are often more alert and less bendy than a full-term newborn in that early 10-day window. They may not curl up the same way, and they may not sleep through the session. What they will do is be exactly who they are – and that stage passes just as quickly as any other. We capture where they are right now, because right now won’t last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Tell me everything ahead of time<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The best thing you can do before your session is be upfront with me about what’s going on. If mom had a C-section, I want to know so I can make sure she’s comfortable throughout. If baby has a feeding tube, is still on oxygen, has a birth defect, or anything else that changes the physical reality of the session – tell me. I plan around those details. The more I know, the better I can make it work for your family.

Why These Photos Matter More Than You Might Realize<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

My husband was in the NICU for several weeks after he was born, and then in and out of the hospital for a couple of years after that because of a digestive complication. There are only a few photos from that time. I’ve thought about that a lot – about what it would mean to be able to look back and actually see<\/em> that season, to have more than a handful of images to hold onto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s part of why I care so much about families in these circumstances. Not because it makes for a more dramatic portfolio, but because those images are going to mean something enormous down the road – to you, and someday maybe to your child too. The photos will show how hard everyone fought to be in the same room. That’s worth capturing.
