A Simple Guide for Expecting Parents

You’ve got a due date, a growing to-do list, and approximately one thousand things competing for your attention right now. Booking a newborn photographer might feel like something you can handle later – after the nursery is set up, after the baby shower, after things settle down a little. But here’s what you need to know before “later” sneaks up on you: timing really does matter, and a little planning now makes everything so much more relaxed once your baby actually arrives.

The Reality of a Newborn Photographer’s Schedule

Newborn sessions aren’t something most photographers can fit in on short notice. For me, a session is essentially a full day – I set aside that time completely for your family. That means only a limited number of sessions happen each month, and those spots fill up faster than most people expect.

If you wait until after baby is born to reach out, you might find your first-choice photographer is already booked. That’s a stressful place to be when you’re a few days postpartum and running on no sleep. Some families have come to me after their baby was born, and while I do my best to make it work, there’s no guarantee of an opening – and if baby is already a few weeks old, some of those early newborn features have already started to change, and poses can be harder to achieve.

Your session should feel calm and unhurried. Booking ahead is one of the biggest things you can do to make that happen.

When to Actually Book (My Honest Advice)

The second trimester is the sweet spot – and that’s genuinely true, not just something photographers tend to say.

Here’s the more specific version: I like to book early and then schedule your session for about a week after your due date. That gives us a realistic target and means you’re not scrambling to pin down a date while you’re in the middle of those first hazy newborn days.

A few things worth knowing:

Newborns are most flexible for posed work in the first couple of weeks. Those tiny curled positions, the sleepy wraps, the little puckered lips – they’re most natural in those earliest days. Older babies photograph beautifully too, but the look and feel of the session is different.

Booking early protects your options. If your due date shifts, or baby comes early, we have room to adjust. That flexibility is much harder to create when you’re booking at the last minute.

You don’t need to have everything figured out yet. You just need to reserve your date. The planning details come later.

What the Planning Process Actually Looks Like

One thing worth knowing before you reach out: there is planning involved – and that’s a good thing.

Before your session, you’ll get a questionnaire (or we’ll have a conversation) to talk through the details. Things like:

Color preferences – Do you have a color scheme in mind, or are you open to suggestions?

Style of posing – Wrapped, bare, posed, or more natural and relaxed?

Props or no props – Some families want a simple focus on baby, others love a few carefully chosen details.

Who’s joining – Will parents be in some of the images? Siblings?

Practical things – The studio will be warm (babies need that), and if older siblings are joining, it helps to have another adult who can take them out once their part is done.

None of this planning is about locking you into something rigid. It’s the opposite, actually. I like having lots of details going in so that if we need to pivot – because a baby is fussy, or a pose isn’t working, or you want to try something different – I’ve already got ideas ready to go. I follow baby’s lead, and and I stay relaxed no matter how the day unfolds. The planning just gives us a good jumping-off point.

Why This All Matters More Than You Might Think

These first days with your baby go fast. I know that sounds like something everyone says, but it’s true in a way that sneaks up on you. The way they curl, the way they smell, the impossibly small hands – it shifts before you’ve had a chance to catch your breath.

Getting your session on the calendar early means that when your baby arrives, you’re not scrambling. You’re not stressed about whether there’s an opening. You already have a date, a plan, and one less thing to figure out. You get to just be with your baby.

That’s what every family deserves – a session that feels like a natural, unhurried part of those early weeks, not a source of stress layered on top of them.

Ready to Reserve Your Date?

If you’re expecting and you’re somewhere in that second trimester window – or even earlier – this is a great time to reach out.
